What to do immediately after a motor accident

If anyone is hurt, call 999 before anything else.

  1. Check for injuries and call 999 if anyone is hurt.
  2. Do not admit liability at the scene.
  3. Exchange names, addresses, vehicle registrations and insurer details with the other driver.
  4. Photograph both vehicles, the road position and any damage before moving.
  5. Note the time, location and weather.
  6. Report to Contoso Insurance within 48 hours, even if you do not intend to claim, so we can protect your position. You will need your policy number and the date of the incident.

Do not

  • Admit liability at the scene, even to be polite
  • Move the vehicles before photographing them, unless they are unsafe where they are
  • Agree a private settlement before you know the extent of the damage

Then report it

Report to Contoso Insurance within 48 hours, even if you do not intend to claim. You will need your policy number and the date of the incident. Reporting is not the same as claiming, and it costs you nothing to protect your position.
